Sean Bickford's K-Net Pagetest site for this local web community |
Hi, my name is Sean. Welcome to my K-Net page. I take photographs around Thunder Bay in Apple's QuickTime media format. This turns my photographs into interactive experiences. The photos here represent only a small portion of the many panoramas I've created in and around the North-Western Ontario region since 2004.
If you are not viewing this webpage using an Apple computer and you are having difficulty viewing the photo links, please consider visiting http://www.quicktime.com in order to download and install the QuickTime Plug-in for Internet Explorer/Firefox.
Once you're sure you have the correct plug-ins installed, remember to click your mouse on my image, and, while holding down the mouse button, drag your mouse in any direction to move the camera's view in any direction you wish to look.
Feel free to leave me a message at the bottom of this page using my "chat-box".

Panoramic Thunder Bay:
The Thunder Bay Botanical Gardens and Conservatory
This photo contains embedded hyperlinks. To display the "Hot Spots" for the links, note the control bar to the bottom of the photo and click on the "show hotspots" icon (click here for an example). Many of the plants have been linked to information (mostly from Wikipedia). There are also links within the photo that take you to other locations at the conservatory.
A Java version of this VR Tour is NOW available to accomodate those folks who do not wish to download and install the Apple.com Quicktime for Windows plug-in. You may see a "nag screen" periodically through the tour - it can be closed and only indicates that I've yet to register the Java based software. The Java version of the tour contains no embedded hyperlinks (yet), however it does automatically rotate the images for you, opens in "full-screen mode", and changes location at each full-turn of the panorama. Please feel free, at anytime during the Java presentation, to click on the image (stopping the auto-rotation) and view the scene at your leisure. The control bar at the bottom of the Java Tour screen will allow you to resume the tour again.

Best of 2007 - A World Wide PanoramaThe submission I chose to represent my best work for the entire year was the first time I was able to create a fully spherical (in other words 360º horizontally and 180° vertically) panorama - it was of the apple trees in bloom on Lakehead University's campus in early June. My panorama
Sustenance - A World Wide Panorama
Thunder Bay is located on the Kaministiqua river delta on the North Shore of Lake Superior. For the WWP theme "Sustenance", I took a more agrarian approach, and I thought the quintessential "farm" had to be one with a silo and a red barn, the fact that the land was recently harvested only added to this Autumn Equinox event.
Community - A World Wide PanoramaThere is a very good reason for the name of our community. This is a view of my community - the city of Thunder Bay, during an electrical storm. I took the shot from the viewing station on Mt. McKay. I was trying to combine two WWP themes into one event - atmosphere and community. The storm had just moved over the lake as I made my way up the mountain - if you view the photo in "full screen" mode, you can just make out the Sleeping Giant on the horizon.
Best Of 2006 - A World Wide Panorama
While not technically my "best" pano for 2006 - I chose to use this opportunity to show off Thunder Bay's Marina Park and still keep up with the Autumn theme (Transportation) I missed earlier in the year. As a primary hub of commerce, this area represents a meeting of Rail, Sea, Lake, and Highway for the north sector of the city, and for the century prior to the construction of an airport in Thunder Bay, this was the first city destination for any visitor to the region. In the summer of 2006 the city offices announced a new waterfront development strategy. It is possible that the view my panorama offers may no longer exist in a few short years. This new vision may incorporate a new shopping kiosk area, a new condominium plaza and possibly an extension of the Provincial Casino. Visible in the panorama - the pedestrian cross-walk bridge, the old VIARail train station in Port Arthur, the boardwalk, and one of the accessways to the slips in the harbour.
Gardens - A World Wide PanoramaThe same week that our new PM Steven Harper was announcing the extension of Canadian military support in Afganistan - I was visiting Toronto, Ontario to see my brother graduate from OISIE Teachers College. It was fate perhaps that led me on this particular day to the Lester B Pearson Garden for Peace and Understanding. I thought it would make a perfect silent comment for one Canadian's perspective of the War for Dollars.
Please feel free to check out the WWP submissions as seen through Google Earth! If you already have Google Earth installed look for the World Wide Panorama layer of your software. You can also obtain a fully updated KML file (opens in Google Earth) from the World Wide Panorama Website.
All panoramic photographs were taken with the Fuji FinePix A345 - 5 megapixel point and shoot camera
